Communications and cyberspace

Have we been consumed by the internet? The more I read from this textbook the more I felt like it's demonstrating how the internet/cyberspace has taken over our daily lives. It mentions how it seems like such a long time ago we used to commute to socialize and gather together for our own personal desires but in today's world we can do everything over the internet or on our mobile devices. The virtual world is slowly but surely taking over our daily lives on step at a time. I can't even remember the last time I spent an entire day off the internet or without a technological device. Even through hurricane Sandy, I found a way to play video games and communicate with friends over the internet or phone.

Chapter 1 mentions how much the world has changed even through the development of emails now we have live chats, text messaging, online cell phone, and etc. It's extremely rare in today's world to socialize with someone before receiving some sort of message before hand. Technology has made us informal and though the process is faster it's much easier to ignore. I can't even imagine a world where people met up in person before a text message or phone call. I'm so used to being notified or notifying someone else before I arrive. Before technology became so advanced, people would walk up to others doors to see them not calling or texting. In some ways, I have to agree, technology is consuming us and we don't even notice it happening because it feels natural.

Even the story of David Alsberg, 42, was shocking to me. He was an innocent man who got shot and died. He was so dedicated to computer programing people considered him living a double life through two communities one being in his neighborhood and the other being cyberspace (Strate, 35). I know for a fact that I could relate to that story, simply because I live a similar double life as I believe most of us do today.
